Open Call: Institute of Tropical Medicine

The Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) in Antwerp is planning a comprehensive redevelopment of its site to create a future-oriented campus that integrates and enhances scientific, medical, and educational activities. For this, it is collaborating with the Vlaams Bouwmeester through an Open Call procedure (OO48), in which designers can apply until November 11, 2024.

The project includes three main elements: a development vision for the entire site, a thorough renovation of the existing art deco buildings, and the construction of modern laboratory facilities. This for a building budget of 60 to 65 million euros (excluding VAT and fees).

ITM aims to transform the campus into a "One health, one global campus" that is both culturally significant, functional and sustainable. The campus should also provide added value to the city of Antwerp as an innovative and cultural (semi)public place that stimulates interaction.

The project area is strategically located between several key urban axes. The campus includes well preserved art deco buildings, a former Capuchin convent and more recent laboratory buildings.

The development vision, which is the first and fixed part of the assignment, focuses on developing a robust plan in which the various functions on the site are clearly organized. This also includes a 3D representation to visualize the intended use and relationship with the urban environment. ITM wants to create a campus that respects the heritage value while meeting contemporary demands for energy efficiency and sustainability. Attention is also paid to greening and de-paving the site, making the protected gardens accessible to the public.

The renovation of the art deco buildings, the second fixed component of the assignment, focuses on restoring valuable heritage elements and redesigning spaces according to the needs of contemporary users. This includes separating public, semi-public, private spaces and developing a concept to communicate about our work through art or exhibitions. The historic buildings will adapted to modern standards of comfort, energy efficiency, and circularity, while also preserving their specific heritage value.

The third and conditional part concerns the construction of new laboratory buildings in collaboration with the Provincial Institute of Hygiene (PIH). This building will provide a state-of-the-art lab facility, meeting strict modern standards (BSL-3 level). The new laboratory building will be developed in the lowercase part of a high rise building next to the existing campus. The tower part of the building provides space for a program filled by an external partner.

In the selection procedure, the emphasis is on finding a quality designer who can translate all of ITM's ambitions into a spatial design through research. The project organization requires expertise in heritage, sustainability, and, in a later phase, advanced laboratory construction from the design team. Additional experts will be included in the design team during the tender phase by the selected teams.
